Historical Context
The Dewey and Almy Chemical Company was incorporated in Massachusetts in 1919 and began operations in a plant located in the Cambridge area of Boston.
The company's founders were military men - Colonel Bradley Dewey and Lieutenant Colonol Charles Almy - who were classmates at Harvard.
The company's initial products included a special adhesive for sticking cork discs into bottle caps; rubber vulcanizing cement for brushes; a shellac substitute for "doping" seams of food containers; and "Grippit," an entirely new adhesive designed for universal use.
In 1954, W. R. Grace purchased Dewey & Almy - an investment one industry analyst later called "among the greatest acquisitions of all time."
