Historical Context
The Cripple Creek and Pueblo Railway Company was incorporated in 1902 by W. Spurgeon of Colorado Springs and a group of Boston businessmen.
The beginning of the road was planned in Cripple Creek near the site of the Florence and Cripple Creek Railroad depot. The first four miles of the road planned to use the Ophelia Tunnel, entering Gold Hill on the Cripple Creek side, and seeing daylight on the east side of the camp, on Beaver Creek. This obviated the great grades, making virtually an air line to the head of Beaver Canon, and making the distance to Pueblo one-third less than any of the present routes.
The company completed some underground work, laid some tracks and purchased the franchises, equipment, rolling stock, engines, right and title of the Gold Exploration and Tunnel Company. The company also acquired, for buildings and dump surface, the property of The Geyser Gold Milling and Mining Company, which gave them forty acres in Cripple Creek for a planned terminal.
However, the area mines soon erupted in labor disputes, forcing many to close. The remaining properties had to dig deeper to reach valuable ore and became prone to flooding. With the downturn in production, railroad traffic rapidly declined. The Cripple Creek and Pueblo Railway went into receivership in 1904, never having run a train.
