Historical Context
The Cranston Coal Company was incorporated in Maine in 1910 and had operations Rhode Island's Narragansett Basin. Company offices were located on Weybosset Street in Providence.
The company controlled over 430 acres only five miles outside of Providence and only an eight of a mile from a New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad depot.
The company touted its product as being of a better quality than Pennsylvania anthacite, but there is no evidence the company was able to stay operational past 1920.
