Historical Context
The Chicago and Great Eastern Railway was originally incorporated under the general laws of Indiana on June 19, 1863.
On October 30, 1863, the line was consolidated with the Galena and Illinois River Railroad Company to form the Chicago and Great Eastern Railway Company (No. 2). The new entity was was consolidated on May 15, 1865 with the Chicago and Cincinnati Railroad Company to form the Chicago and Great Eastern Railway Company (No. 3). Another consolidation occured on May 15, 1865, when No. 3 merged with the Cincinnati and Chicago Air-Line Railroad Company to form the Chicago and Great Eastern Railway Company (No. 4).
Finally, on February 11, 1868, the line was merged with the Columbus and Indiana Central Railway Company to form the Columbus, Chicago and Indiana Central Railway Company.
By the time of the final consolidation, the company operated over 580 miles of track, with lines running from Logansport, Indiana to Chicago, Illinois; from Bradford Junction, Ohio to the western Ohio state line; from the western Ohio state line to Indianapolis, Indiana; from Richmond, Indiana to Logansport, Indiana and from Logansport, Indiana to the western Indiana state line.
The Columbus, Chicago and Indiana Central Railway (which was controlled by the Pittsburgh, Cincinnati and St. Louis Railroad) was conveyed to the Chicago, St. Louis and Pittsburgh Railroad. That company was merged with the PC&StL; Cincinnati and Richmond Railroad and Jeffersonville, Madison and Indianapolis Railroad on September 30, 1890, to form the Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Chicago and St. Louis Railway.
