Historical Context
The Catskill and Albany Steam Boat Company was incorporated in New York in April of 1863. The company’s offices were located in the city of Hudson, which is just over 100 miles north of New York City. The company operated a single ship - the City of Hudson.
On May 13, 1880, a fire in the company’s store house destroyed the majority of the village of Stuyvesant, which was located 11 miles to north of Hudson. The fire burned more than a square mile of the town and destroyed the post office, the railroad depot, the Stuyvesant Iron Company, and numerous other local businesses.
