Historical Context
Formed in 1986, the Boston Celtics Limited Partnership operated the Boston Celtics basketball team, representing the financial, managerial, and broadcasting power behind arguably the most successful franchise in the history of sports. The company - which owned 48% of the Boston Celtics (the other 52% being owned by Don Gaston - sold shareholder units to the general public, usually Celtics' fans, who purchased a small number of units just to have a symbolic piece of the team.
The company was reorganized in 1998 as the Boston Celtics Limited Partnership II, before being bought out by Boston Basketball Partners LLC in 2002.
Founded in 1946 as one of the league's original eight teams, the Celtics play their home games at TD Garden, which is also the home of the National Hockey League's Boston Bruins. The Celtics are one of the most successful basketball teams in NBA history. The franchise is one of two teams with 17 NBA Championships, the other franchise being the Los Angeles Lakers. The Celtics currently hold the record for the most recorded wins of any NBA team.
