Historical Context
The All-Package Grocery Stores Company was incorporated in Delaware in 1915 and operated over 150 grocery stores in New York City, New Jersey and Chicago, Illinois.
The company's first store was located in Brooklyn.
Some of the unique features of this chain-store system, aside from the fact that only package goods were sold, are as follows:
- A weekly price list was issued giving prices on every article sold.
- All the stores closed at 1 o'clock every Wednesday afternoon to permit the store managers and clerks to attend the merchandising school conducted at headquarters, where instruction is given in the art of modern storekeeping.
- Because everything was sold in packages no scales were used.
- Cash registers were also not used - the management stating that a checking system prevents thefts of money or merchandise.
- The stores were maintained on a cash basis. Few deliveries were made, and these were via push cart.
- The company put up and featured a large variety of products under its own brand, but also sells well-known advertised package goods
