Historical Context
Potomska Mills was founded in New Bedford, Massachusetts in 1872, becoming the second major textile firm in the city. Wamsutta was the city's original textile manufacturer.
Potomska was financed by local businessmen who also had stakes in Wamsutta. The company produced a coarser cloth that did not compete with Wamsutta's finer products.
New Bedford quickly became an ideal location for the the country's burgeoning textile industry. Besides offering a humid climate that optimized textile processing, the city had an excellent harbor for the delivery of coal to power the steam engines fed by the city's extensive fresh water delivery system. Textile companies owned their own wharves to reduce transportation and wharfage fees.
