Fascinating piece of financial history from this data storage giant!
Western Digital was founded on April 23, 1970, by Alvin B. Phillips as General Digital Corporation before becoming Western Digital in 1971. Initially, the company focused on making calculator chips and became the world's largest independent calculator chip maker by 1975, but it entered a period of financial hardship and filed for bankruptcy in 1976. Following a turnaround, the company transitioned to making computer components, particularly floppy and hard drive controllers, and eventually began producing its own hard disk drives in 1988. Over the decades, Western Digital grew into one of the world's largest data storage companies through acquisitions and innovation.
