Historical Context
The L. B. Patent Shoe Company was incorporated in Washington, DC and had offices in the Corcoran Building on 15th and F Streets.
The company owned the United States Patent granted to T. Leadbetter of Leeds, England, for a shoe with a detachable sole and/or heel. The shoe came with two sets of heels which allowed the wearer to switch them at their leisure (in about three minutes per company literature) thus prolonging the life of the shoe.
