Fascinating piece of financial history from this retail giant!
Circuit City began in 1949 as a small storefront named Wards Company in Richmond, VA, but grew into a national consumer electronics retailer. The company, led by founder Samuel Wurtzel and later his son Alan, officially changed its name to Circuit City in 1984 and pioneered the "electronic superstore" format. Following years of success, the company faced a decline due to factors like a failed investment in DIVX and a controversial 2007 layoff of 3,400 employees to cut costs, leading to bankruptcy in 2008 and the closure of all stores by March 2009. The brand name and trademarks were later acquired, and a new version of the company relaunched its e-commerce website in 2018.
