Historical Context
In 1919, an inventor from California - Amon J. Haskins - developed what he thought was an improvement to Robert Fulton's revolutionary steamboat.
Over 100 years after Fulton's death, Haskins dubiously aligned himself with Fulton to promote his "Aero-Marine Locomotive," even placing a portrait of Fulton on this stock certificate.
Haskins "invention" placed the hull of the boat atop two giant rollers, which when turned with enough force, would generate speeds of up to 60 mph. However, the supposed selling point of the system - less resistance in the water - also proved to be the problem, as the lack of resistance also led to very little headway being made in the water.
In all likelihood, Haskins knew of this "problem." The same idea had been floated by a French inventor some 20 years earlier, with no sucess. However, this didn't stop Haskins from promoting his stock to unknowing investors. In the end, the "Aero-Marine Locomotive" was nothing more than a money grab, never advancing past Haskins' promotion.
