The Mississippi Central Railroad Company was incorporated March 10, 1852. In 1859 it consolidated with the Mississippi Central & Tennessee Railroad Company. In 1868, the Mississippi Central Railroad Company leased its railroad extending from Canton, Mississippi, to Jackson, Tennessee, to the Southern Railroad Association for sixteen years, beginning September 1 of that year. On April 13, 1874, Mississippi Central consolidated with the New Orleans, Jackson & Great Northern Railroad Company (NOJ&GN), to become the New Orleans, St. Louis & Chicago Railroad Company (NOStL&C), which in turn was sold under foreclosure in 1876-1877.
