Historical Context
The Sleeper Radio Corporation was originally formed as the General Apparatus Company in 1919 by Milton B. Sleeper. The company name was changed to the Sleeper Radio Corporation in 1923, with the company being run by Milton's brother - Gordon C. Sleeper. But, apparently there was some bad blood between the brothers, and Milton sold all of his stock in the company the same year Gordon started handling daily operations. In October of 1924, Gordon moved the company to a new manufacturing facility in Long Island City, New York and by December had over a $1M in sales. In August 1925, the company signed a contract with Music Master for 20,000 model 140's. This move monopolized the production lines and crowded out other models and customers. The decision became disasterous when Music Master failed, making the contract worthless. In February of 1926, the company was put into the hands of a receiver and all of their sets and parts were sold. In July of that year, the Sleeper Radio & Manufacturing Company was formed out of the ruins, sold a new issue of stock, and a month later was out with a new line of models. The company struggled on, but realizing it could not remain solvent in their current state, attempted to become an RCA licensee. This effort ultimately failed, and in 1928, the company was acquired by speaker-maker Temple. Temple was bankrupt two years later, and both Sleeper and Temple faded to black. |
