Historical Context
The roots of this line go back to the Rhode Island Mining Railroad Company, which was founded to build a line to transport mining deposits located in the Cumberland area.
In 1875, the company abandoned its mining plans and reorganized as the Rhode Island and Massachusetts Railroad, concentrating its efforts on freight and passenger service. The line eventually opened in 1877, connecting the main Boston line at Franklin to the Providence and Worcester Railroad at Valley Falls.
The New York and New England Railroad leased the line in 1887, before it became part of the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad system.
