Historical Context
The Pittsburg Traction Company was incorporated in Pennsylvania on April 30, 1887 and was operated by the Pittsburg Railways Company.
The company began constructing a cable line later that year beginning at the foot of Fifth Avenue and running east along Shady, Penn and Highland Avenues, a distance of 5.5 miles. The line opened for passengers on September 12, 1889.
Later, the company had about 18.5 miles of track in the Pittsburgh area.
In April of 1896, the company - along with the Central Traction Company, Citizens Traction Company and Duquesne Traction Company - was leased to the Consolidated Traction Company.
