Historical Context
In 1910, Fred Hughes and Leslie Hatcher opened their clothing store in downtown Detroit, and it soon became the top name in gentlemen’s fine apparel. Aside from their stylish suits, Hughes & Hatcher was known for having the largest display windows in town.
The company's slogans included "Everything a Man Will Wear!" and "Detroit's Accepted Style Corner."
Women's clothing was added in 1944.
Later, Hughes & Hatcher expanded into other areas like Chicago, Cleveland and Pittsburgh.
In the 1950's the company merged with Harry Suffrin to become Hughes-Hatcher-Suffrin.
Eventually controlled by United Department Stores, Inc., the company went out of business in 1983.
