Historical Context
In 1865, the Pennsylvania Railroad opened one of its "commutation" railroads in Lewistown, Pennsylvania - a feeder line that it agreed to build to stimulate local growth, in exchange for the Legislature's commutation of a tonnage tax enacted during the canal era (and superfluous after the decline of canals).
This twelve-mile-long branch line was the Mifflin and Centre County Railroad, which extended north to the villages of Burnham, Reedsville and Melroy at the base of the Seven Mountains.
