Historical Context
The Buffalo, New York and Philadelphia Railway was incorporated on April 12, 1871. The line was consolidated with the Buffalo, Pittsburgh & Western RR to become the Western New York and Pennsylvania Railway on February 14, 1883.
The line controlled the Genesee Valley Canal Railroad; the Rochester, New York & Pennsylvania Railroad; the McKean & Buffalo Railroad; the Kendall & Eldred Railroad; the Olean & Bradford Railroad; and the Mayville Extension Railroad. The total number of miles of railroad owned and controlled by the company was 718.
In addition to its railroad property the company controlled extensive coal mines and coal lands in Pennsylvania, from which it furnished its roads with an unlimited amount of coal traffic. It also controlled most of the passenger and freight business of Chautauqua Lake, on which it had a fleet of five large steamers. Its branch roads also reached to Bradford, the center of the principal oil producing territory, to Clermont, the seat of the aforementioned coal mines. This gave the line a large and constantly increasing business in the carriage of anthracite and bituminous coal, oil, lumber, bark, grain, and numerous other articles.
