Historical Context
The Cresson & Clearfield County and New York Short Route Rail Road was formed in 1882 and extended from Cresson on the Main Line of the Pittsburg & Erie to Irvona, a distance of 27 1/2 miles. The line was built to develop what was known as the Mountain Coal District on the Alleghenies.
In 1893, the line was leased by the Pennsylvania Railroad Company, which in turn operated the line as part of its Cambria and Clearfield Division.
The company was sold at foreclosure just one year later.
