Historical Context
The Oregon Trunk Line was incorporated under the laws of Nevada in 1906 and planned to build a road in central Oregon from The Dalles, along the Columbia River and then along the Des Chutes River from its confluence with the Columbia to Madras.
The company completed some grading, but its property consisted mainly of surveys, right-of-way contracts, and right of way over public lands.
In 1909, the Oregon Trunk Railway was formed under Washington law to take over the Central Oregon Railroad Company and the Oregon Trunk Line, Inc. - both of which had only been partially completed. It completed those lines and built additional trackage aggregating 157 miles and linking the cities of Fallbridge (Washington), Metolius (Oregon), Opal City (Oregon), and Bend (Oregon). The Great Northern sold a half interest in the Oregon Trunk Railway to the Northern Pacific Railway in 1910 and it was thereafter managed by their joint subsidiary, the Spokane, Portland and Seattle Railway.
