Historical Context
The James River Valley Railroad was incorporated in the Dakota Territories on August 2, 1883.
The company constructed a line from Jamestown to LaMoure in a period spanning a little over two years, completing the line in December of 1885. The line was leased by the Northern Pacific immediately upon completion, then purchased by the larger road.
It was largely used for agricultural freight traffic.
