    Historical Context

The W. P. Chase Candy Corporation was based in New York, with operations located in Brooklyn.

In 1926, the company was sued by M. Witmark and Sons, over the use of some of the words from the song “Sweet Adeline,” which were printed on the wrapper of Chase’s taffy product. Chase’s taffy was spelled differently than the song title, substituting an “a” for an “e” (Sweet Adaline). However, the candy maker also used a line from the song - “Sweet Adaline, my heart doth pine” - resulting in the suit. Witmark & Sons, which had owned the rights to the song since 1903, sought over $250 in damages, as well as Chase’s discontinuation of the wrapper.

This piece is signed by W. P. Chase as the company President.
