Historical Context
This line was originally incorporated in New York on December 29, 1851 to construct a horse-drawn railroad in Manhattan, New York City, beginning at the junction of Clarkson, Varick and Carmine Streets, and running along Clarkson Street west to the Hudson River at West Street.
The company eventually would run a line along 6th Avenue from 59th Street to 4th Street and through various streets to Vesey Street abnd Broadway.
In 1892, the company leased their lines to the Houston, West Street & Pavonia Ferry Railroad.
The following year, the Houston, West Street & Pavonia Ferry Railroad, the South Ferry Company and the Broadway Railroad were consolidated to form the Metropolitan Street Railway.
