Historical Context
The United Stores Association was incorporated in New York in 1911. The company's offices were in the Steiner Building, 31st Street and Broadway, in Manhattan. The company's aim was to introduce the United States to the co-operative movement that had been so successful in England and some European countries.
While there were many co-operative societies in the United States at the time, they were all operating in small communities. This was the first attempt to put the co-operative idea into practice in a big ciy.
The association aimed to benefit both dealers and consumers. It differed in its plan of operation from the English co-operative idea, in that it did not own its own stores, or manufacture its own wares.
The object of the association was to enable all the responsible New York retailers of groceries, dry goods, drugs, shoes, hats, meats, bread, milk, clothing, etc., to buy together, advertise together, deliver together, étc., with a view of reducing the cost of doing business and allowing the association to distribute monthly from its offices a six per cent rebate from the amount of their purchases to all customers if they become members of the association.
Unfortunately, the co-operative never took off, and the company declared bankruptcy after only a year.
