Historical Context
The Philadelphia and Gulf Steamship Company was incorporated in Delaware in 1908.
The company operated a passenger and cargo route between Philadelphia and New Orleans, as well as some other Gulf of Mexico ports.
The company was based on Pier 19 in Philadelphia, but did not last long - filing for bankruptcy in 1922. Hearings at the Interstate Commerce Commission later revealed that the competing Morgan Line, based in the Gulf of Mexico, had engaged in underhanded business activities designed to drive the Philadelphia firm out of business. The Morgan Line secretly purchased Philadelphia & Gulf’s manifests and circulated rumors that the line was unable to charter a sufficient number of vessels.
