Historical Context
The Peterborough Railroad was chartered in 1866 to continue the Wilton Railroad (which ran from Nashua to East Wilton) northwest to Greenfield, New Hampshire. In 1873 the line was by the Nashua and Lowell Railroad. The road opened in 1874.
In 1884, the Nashua and Lowell Railroad, the Stony Brook Railroad Company, the Wilton Railroad Company, the Peterborough Railroad and the Manchester and Keene Railroad were consolidated under the name of the Boston and Lowell Railroad Company.
