Historical Context
This company was originally incorporated in New York as the Duplex Machine Company. In 1924, the company acquired Carleton Brothers (of Brooklyn, New York) and the American Bell Radio Corporation and reorganized as Duplex Motion Picture Industries Inc., now a Delaware entity.
The company produced motion picture equipment that was used by such companies as Famous Players, Universal, Technicolor and Fox Films.
The company also produced consumer-oriented products, including the Project-A-Graph projector, which ran 11.5mm wide film with the sprocket hole in the center of the frame to maximize the picture area. It was just one offering among many similarly doomed film gauges intended to put a more affordable, standardized safety film (non-flammable) into schools and churches. Unfortunately, it ran up against the efforts of Kodak, whose 16mm film quickly became ubiquitous across the land.
