Historical Context
The Gulf & Chicago Railroad was organized on August 1, 1889 when line bought at foreclosure sale the Ship Island, Ripley & Kentucky Railroad which operated between Middleton, Tennessee and Ripley (25 miles) and the Gulf & Ship Island Railroad (Northern Division ) which ran between Ripley and Pontotoc (37 miles).
The Gulf & Chicago Railroad became the Gulf and Chicago Railway on July 1, 1903. At the time of the change, the company was leased to the Mobile, Jackson & Kansas City Railroad.
On December 1, 1909, the Gulf & Chicago and Mobile, Jackson & Kansas City were officially merged to form the New Orleans, Mobile & Chicago Railroad.
