Historical Context
Anheuser-Busch is the world's third largest brewing company in volume after InBev and SABMiller. Based in St. Louis, Missouri, the company brews 35 different beers and malt liquors. Anheuser-Busch's best known beers include brands such as Budweiser, the Busch and Michelob families, and Natural Light. The company also produces a number of smaller-volume and specialty beers, nonalcoholic brews, malt liquors (King Cobra and the Hurricane family), and flavored malt beverages (the Bacardi family and Tequiza). "A-B", as the company is often called, owns 12 U.S. breweries. Some important dates in the history of A-B include:
1860 - Eberhard Anheuser acquires the Bavarian Brewery; ranked 29th of 40 breweries in St. Louis, and renames it E. Anheuser Busch & Company Bavarian Brewery.
1864 - Adolphus Busch starts to work at the plant.
1872 - The famous A & Eagle trademark is introduced.
1876 – Budweiser Beer is introduced.
1896 – Michelob Beer is introduced.
1920 – As a result of Prohibition, the company begins manufacturing near-beer and ice cream (ice cream production facilities were sold off in the 1930’s).
1923 – Carcho Chocolate Beverage introduced (product discontinued in 1928).
1933 – The Budweiser Clydesdales become the company symbol (the dalmation was added in 1950!).
1936 - Budweiser becomes the first A-B product to be marketed in cans.
1953 – A-B purchases the St. Louis Cardinals baseball team.
1959 – Busch Gardens opens in Tampa.
1963 – Ed McMahon begins his affiliation with the company.
1978 – Michelob Light is introduced.
1981 – Bud Light and Michelob Classic Dark are introduced.
1986 – A-B produces its one-billionth barrel of beer.
