Historical Context
The Union Lock-Stitch Company was incorporated in Maine in 1903 and had operations in East Boston.
In 1905, the company was the first to produce a high speed leather stitcher. The innovation set of a fierce battle with the heavy handed United Shoe Machinery Corporation, which, Union Lock-Stitch President Frank Merrick said, threatened to put Union Lock-Stitch out of business if they did not sell out to United Shoe Machinery.
United Shoe Machinery President Sidney Winslow denied any such threats were made.
