Historical Context
The National Leather Company was incorporated in Maine in 1919.
The company was formed to acquire the A. C. Lawrence Leather Company, Boston, Massachusetts, (with tanneries at Peabody); the National Calfskin Company, Boston, Massachusetts, (with tanneries at Peabody); the Winchester Tannery Company, Boston, Massachusetts, (with tanneries at Winchester, New Hampshire); the St. Paul Tannery, South St. Paul, Minnesota; the National Leather Manufacturing Company, Niles, Michigan.
The company also had controlling interests in England, Walton & Company, Inc., Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, (with tanneries at various places); the Ashland Leather Company, Ashland, Kentucky; and the St. Joseph Tanning Company, South St. Joseph, Missouri.
In addition to the actual tanning process, the company was also engaged in the manufacture of sole, upper, glove and garment leathers and welting.
