Historical Context
In 1921, the Grand Rapids, Michigan-based G.H. Johnson Cigar Company, maker of Dutch Masters, merged with six other cigar companies to create the Consolidated Cigar Corporation. The company headquarters was subsequently moved to Manhattan in New York City. Dutch Masters would become the mainstay of the company, proving to be one of the most popular products of its time.
In 1926, the company bought G.H.P, makers of El Producto, a favorite brand of comedian George Burns who smoked them until age 100.
In 1956, Consolidated obtained Muriel from P. Lorillard. Blonde bombshell Edie Adams’s “Why don’t you pick me up and smoke me sometime!” became one of the nation’s best known TV commercial theme songs.
In 1968, Gulf+Western Industries, a major conglomerate with holdings that included Paramount Pictures, Simon & Schuster and Madison Square Garden, acquired 23 companies, including Consolidated Cigar.
