Historical Context
The New England Telephone and Telegraph Company was incorporated in the New York in 1883 as a consolidation of the Bay State Telephone Company, the Boston & Northern Telephone Company, the Granite State Telephone Company, the National Bell Telephone Company of Maine, the Suburban Telephone Company, the Pioneer Telephone Company, the Cheshire Telephone Company, and the Telephone Despatch Company of Boston. It later gained a controlling interest in smaller regional companies in New England including the Southern Massachusetts Telephone Company (1899) and the Providence Telephone Company (1912). The smaller companies were subsequently absorbed by NET&T.
Its slogan and jingle was "We're the one for you, New England. New England Telephone."
The company eventually merged with New York Telephone to become NYNEX (one of the original 7 Baby Bells). NYNEX later became part of Bell Atlantic, before it became today’s incarnation – Verizon.
