Historical Context
The Western Illinois Telephone Company was incorporated in Illinois and was based in Macomb.
Originally, the company operated a general telephone system in Hancock County consisting of local exchanges and connecting toll lines.
By 1899, the company had over 700 miles of toll lines in six counties and maintained toll stations in 59 towns. Cables beneath the Mississippi and Illinois Rivers connected subscribers with Missouri and Iowa.
In 1928, the company was consolidated with a number of small, regional telephone companies to form the Iowa-Illinois Telephone Company.
