Historical Context
Cooper-Jarrett was organized in Missouri in 1934 by Sam Jarrett and Robert E. Cooper, Jr. The company started as a single truck operation soliciting business to and from the Kansas City area.
Cooper wanted to expand eastward, but Jarrett was not on board, leading Cooper to buy out Jarrett in 1935.
By the mid-fifties it was operating a relay system where drivers was driving four hours in one direction, switching equipment with other drivers coming from the opposite direction, and returning back home.
The Hendrickson tandem tractors was CJ's truck of choice for this operation which, at that time, was spanned fifteen states from Massachusetts to Illinois and Wisconsin.
By 1965, the company was the 36th largest U.S. motor carrier, with headquarters located in Morristown, New Jersey.
Following deregulation and the subsequent increased competition, the company filed bankruptcy in December 1981, and shut down all operations.
