Historical Context
The Computer Telephone Company of Chicago, Inc. was founded by Peter James, the inventor of the "Comput-a-Phone." The company was the marketing arm of the "Comput-a-Phone," with James also founding Photo Magnetic Systems, Inc. as the manufaturing arm.
James' invention was marketed as "letting your fingers do the talking," turning a standard touch tone telephone into a desk calculator, functioning as a full alphanumeric typewriter keyboard, a remote data entry terminal and a remote key punch device.
The "Comput-a-Phone" translated the touch tone entries to computers, allowing people to enter data, place orders, confirm settings, etc. In a way, it was a predecessor to today's automated telephone systems.
However, it may have been just a bit too early for its own good, as the company, and the device, never became commercialy viable.
