Historical Context
The Newmarket and Sperryville Turnpike was located on what is today’s U.S. Route 211. Today, many souvenir and produce stands line Route 211 during weekend tourist season, as it is a gateway to Shenandoah National Park and the popular Old Rag Mountain.
Newmarket is located in Shenendoah County and Sperryville in Rappahannock County, Virginia, two of the state’s northernmost counties.
