Historical Context
The Nyack and Southern Railroad was formed to acquire the assets of the Nyack and Northern Railroad, which was incorporated on November 25, 1868, under the general laws of the State of New York.
The company operated a line extending from Sparkill to Nyack, a distance of just over four miles. From its opening in May 1870, the Nyack and Northern Railroad Company became the northern terminal for most trains of the Northern Railroad of New Jersey - which controlled the company.
Its property, rights, and franchises were sold at foreclosure July 23, 1892, and were acquired by the newly formed Nyack and Southern on December 16, 1899 - which was formed specifically to acquire the Nyack and Northern's assets. The Nyack and Northern then operated the line as an arm of the Erie Railroad.
