Historical Context
Lerner Shops was founded in 1918 by Samuel A. Lerner and Harold M Lane in New York City. The company was eventually incorporated in Maryland in 1929.
At the company's peak, the women's discount chain operated over 750 stores - making it the largest retailer in the segment.
Lerner was purchased in 1973 by McCrory Corporation - a subsidiary of the Rapid-American Corporation. McCrory operated J. J. Newberry and McCrory.
Rapid-American sold the Lerner division to The Limited in 1985.
