Historical Context
Bernheimer-Leader Stores, Incorporated was formed in 1923 as a consolidation of two bargain stores - Bernheimer Brothers and Leader.
The company was incorporated in Maryland, with offices in Baltimore. The company's flagship store was a large, palace-style building on the southwest corner of Howard and Lexington Streets.
In 1927, the company was purchased by the Hecht Company. Hecht was in turn acquired by the May Company.
