Historical Context
The Gold Exploration and Tunnel Company was incorporated in West Virginia in 1896.
The company obtained a lease on the south half of the Little Clara Claim belonging to the Work Mining and Milling Company. Work was carried on through the Ophelia Tunnel, which was located a short distance south of Cripple Creek.
The tunnel projected extent of the tunnel was 17 1/2 miles, including main line and extensions, the main line proper being 3 miles in length. The depths at which the tunnel passed beneath the principal points in the district varied from 773 to 1,498 feet. The tunnel was 4,500 feet in solid rock, and no timbering was necessary. No water was encountered, but provision was made for that event by a capacious box-drain beneath the car-tracks. The grade of the tunnel was 1 in 200.
Haulage was originally by mules, but a compressed-air engine was later introduced.
The company's assets were later acquired by the Cripple Creek and Pueblo Railway Company.
