Historical Context
The Rio Grande Junction Railway was organized in Colorado in 1890 to build a 62-mile line from Grand Junction in Mesa County to New Castle, acting as a neutral throat for the Colorado Midland and Denver and Rio Grande (who jointly operated the line), and bringing the Denver and Rio Grande Western (DRGW) the concentrated business of the several lines reaching Colorado from the east. Both the Colorado Midland and the Denver and Rio Grande were trying to reach Grand Junction and the Rio Grande Western's standard gauge connection to Salt Lake City, and the decision was made to build one joint railway rather than two competing, parallel routes.
Later that year, the company constructed a branch line originating at Thistle Point and running south through the San Pete and Sevier valleys - a distance of about 130 miles.
On April 11, 1947, the property of the D&RGW was sold to the reorganized D&RGW, merging the old D&RGW with the Denver & Salt Lake Railway, the Denver & Salt Lake Western Railroad (the Dotsero Cutoff), the Rio Grande Junction Railroad, and the Goshen Valley Railroad.
