Historical Context
The Fair Play-Mount Sheridan and Leadville Railway Company was incorporated to build a line through the mining regions of Colorado. The project was funded by Pittsburgh capital.
The main line was to run from Denver to Leadville, covering only 94 miles, as opposed to the 300 mile Denver and Rio Grande route and the 160 mile Denver and South Park route.
At a point 20 miles from Leadville, the road was to have a branch in the direction of Salt Lake City and another heading towards Tucson, Arizona, following for some distance the north fork of the Gunnison river.
The total length of the projected road was 1,050 miles. The company's tunnel through the mountain range at Mosquito pass was three-quarters of a mile long.
