Historical Context
The Michigan-Colorado Copper Company was incorporated in Colorado and operated the Cashin Mine near Bedrock in Montrose County. The company purchased the mine from the La Sal Copper Mining Company in 1918.
In 1926, the company mine officials were convicted of stock fraud. The company over reported production numbers in an effort to sell its shares. Most of the company's profits, however, were actually eaten up by the transportation costs associated with getting the ore to the nearest railroad, which was over 70 miles away.
The company was ordered to repay the investors' outlay, but it was considered a hollow victory as most, if not all, of the company's cash was used in developing the mine.
