Historical Context
The Crystal Pavilion & Amusement Company was incorporated on January 23, 1926 to operate and oversee future construction of Crystal Lake Park - an amusement park located just north of Marion, Ohio.
Crystal Lake was formed in an abandoned quarry. In the early 1920's, a group of local businessmen began planning an amusement park that would ring the popular swimming spot.
Construction began in 1924, with the first phase completed the following year. Phase I included "The Skooter" and "The Dutch Mill Ride." Phase II included "The Zip" a massive rollercoaster that included a 65 foot drop and 2,500 feet of track.
The park's tallest ride was "The Aeroplane Swing," where riders circled a 70-foot tall tower in a bi-plane style gondola.
Crystal Lake was designed as an open-air park, with patrons only having to pay for the rides they wanted - which cost about ten cents each. The park also had one of the largest Merry-Go-Rounds in Ohio.
However, the market crash of 1929 crippled the Crystal Pavilion and Amusement Company forcing the park's closure. Soon after, the rides were dismantled and sold to other amusement park operators.
