Historical Context
The Seattle and San Francisco Railway and Navigation Company (S&SFR&N) was incorporated in Washington in 1899.
The company never built a railway, but simply had a traffic agreement with the Northern Pacific Railway, which allowed the company to reach its coal mines over the NPs road. The S&SFR&N was able to make this agreement with the Northern Pacific, because it held a franchise in Seattle, which then allowed the NP to extend its tracks through the city, and across the tidal flats to a deep water frontage in the harbor of Seattle. This frontage is what the Northern Pacific had been striving for, but had been unable to obtain, until making the joint traffic agreement with the S&SFR&N.
The company owned 1,931 acres of coal land, 25 miles southeast of Seattle.
The company was folded into the Northern Pacific Railway in 1903.
