Historical Context
The Schuylkill Transportation Company was organized under the Presidency of Powell Evans, who was also President of the Schuylkill Railway, which operated approximately 45 miles of interurban electric railway in Schuylkill County.
The line was under the general management of C. Sims Bailey, who was also general manager of the Schuylkill Railway and the Schuylkill Electric Company. Herbert C. Noakes, who was connected with the Schuylkill Railway Company for some time, was in charge of transportation.
The nearest railway route to the new bus line was the Philadelphia & Reading, which ran through Mahanoy City and touched a point immediately in the vicinity of Lakeside Park and also touched Tamaqua.
The buses were to connect with the end of the Schuylkill Railway at Mahonoy City, and continue the service to Tamaqua using six buses from Mahanoy City to Tamaqua on one division, and from McAdoo to Lakeside Park on the other division. Lakeside Park was about halfway between Mahanoy City and Tamaqua.
The distance from Mahanoy City to Lakeside Park was 5.2 miles, and from Mahanoy City to Tamaqua was 11 miles. From McAdoo to Lakeside Park was 10 miles. Service was started on July 4, 1922 with two buses.
