Historical Context
The Great Southern Lumber and Railway Supply Company was incorporated in New York in 1882.
The company purchased over 13,000 acres of poor pine lands in Baldwin County, Alabama at 50 cents an acre in what the company hoped would net over $4,000,000 of revenue from the harvesting and selling of the timber - at least as outlined in the company's rather optimistic prospectus.
However, by 1885 there was no record that company remained in existence.
