Historical Context
The Manhattan Transit Company was incorporated in New York on May 15, 1902 assuming control of the assets of the General Carriage Company.
That same year, the company acquired the assets of the New York & Brooklyn Tunnel Railroad Company, which controlled the rights to build a railroad tunnel from Park Row in Manhattan to City Hall in Brooklyn.
